魔法先生 ネギま!Volume 34 Chapter 311 (manga)
Mahou Sensei Negima! Manga Chapter 311
Negima! Manga Vol 34 Ch 311 Review
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
Fate easily survives Kotaro’s beast-mode attack and counters with his traditional massive rock shards from the ground, one of which pierces Kotaro in the gut. However, Asakura has her spy cameras provide Chachamaru with exact coordinates of Fate’s location, thus she’s able to uses her orbital satellite artifact’s full power to attack Fate. Nodoka uses the Great Grand Master Key to “Relocate” and teleport the entire group, including Kotaro, away from the blast zone. Unfortunately, Nodoka was unable to teleport them to Negi’s location but they are still too close to the alter for safety’s sake.
Back at where the Great Paru-sama and Johnny-san’s ships are landed, Misora and the others are amazed at the power of Chachamaru’s future-tech artifact. Chachamaru cannot confirm if her attack took out Fate but she confirms that the group has the “Imperial Princess of the Twilight” and the Great Grand Master Key. She also reports that the group suffered three casualties. Paru orders everyone back into the ship now that repairs are complete so that they can bail out as soon as the others arrive. Unfortunately, as Misora, Cocone, Collet, Mei, Takane, and Chachamaru get back on deck of the Great Paru-sama, Chachamaru senses an intruder and knocks the others out of the way as she gets sliced in half at the waist. Their attacker is another version of Fate, called “Quartum, the Averruncus of Fire.”
Back with Nodoka, she attempts to teleport them away but takes a massive bolt of lightning instead. The Great Grand Master Key flies away from the group to another version of Fate, called “Quintum, Averruncus of Wind.”
Over with the group with Negi, Dynamis (Dunamis) praises the group for their plan using Natsumi’s artifact as it will likely take “Tertium” (Fate) by surprise. However, he tells them that they had other cards to play and that the current version of Fate was brought to life by Dunamis. Thanks to the Great Grand Master Key, the remaining three “units” have gone active. With that, the final version of Fate arrives, a female version named “Sextum, Averruncus of Water.”
Thoughts/Review:
Whatever hope I had that Negi’s battle harem would bail Negi out this time have pretty much been dashed with the arrival of these three new Fate “units.” I really, really wanted the girls to shine and the group to make an escape with Negi healed on the way out because it would be different. However, despite being disappointed, I am not surprised at what has happened. Negima! is a shounen manga and Negi is the hero, thus he has to be the hero again.
I think the other frustrating part about this development is that the group’s escape from the Magic World is once again thwarted. This struck home for me when I finally scored volume 28 from Del Rey. Back then, the group was planning to simply rescue Anya and Yue (before they knew she wasn’t down there). Then, Kurt stepped in and began what has become a long series of obstacles to overcome just to get the heck out of Dodge.
Just so we are clear, I’m NOT complaining. Much like the Mahora Festival arc, which seemed to go on forever when reading chapter by chapter, when read in book form in a continuous manner over a short period of time, it works quite well. I expect the same thing will be the case once the Magic World arc has concluded. So, I wanted to make it clear that I’m not complaining but at the same time, when reading on a week-to-week basis with breaks thrown in for good measure, one tends to want things to move on faster than they should in terms of overall story.
The answer to the question of how Chachamaru targeted Fate (Tertium) was answered. To quote myself,
Chachamaru could have flown in I suppose but with a laser target device, she would be some distance away so as not to be caught in the blast zone. As long as she can point to the area needed, it should be fine.
Asakura’s cameras provided the accurate data needed to target Fate and Chachamaru may not have even pointed at the target but simply pulled the trigger. Regardless, the mystery is solved and I was completely wrong when I thought that this bit of information wouldn’t be revealed to us. *lol*
I wonder if Akamatsu-sensei watched the movie Aliens (or was inspired by it) when he drew the post-sliced Chachamaru. The scene was very similar to one in Aliens when the android Bishop gets ripped in half at the waste. In Aliens, Bishop still gets to be a hero despite being damaged so it wouldn’t surprise me if Chachamaru got to do something similar.
Whether she does get to do something or not, Akamatsu-sensei is losing more characters. Since Nodoka took a blast from a bolt of lightning, I expect her to be out as well. I expect more characters to be lost before this piece of the story is over.
Anyway, leave it to Akamatsu-sensei to introduce three new Fate-type “units” to make things even more difficult. CE now has the Great Grand Master Key and it wouldn’t surprise me if they take Asuna back as well. It will be interesting to see how this particular plot twist is overcome.
So, nothing to do but wait until December 22 when Negima! chapter 312 is released in Japan.
It is still impressive that if you count only Tertium, THE PLAN WORKED PERFECTLY!!
(even if he most probably survived that attack)
That brings the possibility Fate 3.0 may eventually join Negi in defeating Fate 4.0-6.0 since, as Rakan said, he is more human than the other Fate versions.
(Implying that, since 4.0-6.0 were made just recently they lack the interaction with people Fate 3.0 has and should lack his humane attributes)
….I only hope that sextum doesnt join negi’s battle harem ….something that seems unlikly. I mean they even sent her right to negi.
chacha small compact body version and her normal body version is different right?? meaning chacha could still fight…
hopefully the other fate haven’t got enough time to increase their combat capability
hmm…water fate?
sounds like it’s time for Akira to get a pactio. Something like waterbending perhaps.
aqua-splash indeed!
This chapter only brings me questions =S
If 4-6 were revived why was 1 and 2 not? (i still think first or second one was Zect)
as for the Gravekeeper girl =S wheres she i think if she is chao after finding out what happened to Chachamaru shes going to rush to battle. Although as much as id like to See Tetrium and Negi team up its just way unlikely but hell look what we’ve seen so far lol.
I still hope Eva is the one that fights 6 though i mean it would be sick to see 2 high class ice & water mages fight we havent really seen much Fire magic nor “water” magic yet so its going to be interesting, im curious to see the strongest fire spell or water spell
(i assume right now for Stone, the stone pillars is one of the strongest Stone spells)
GRR such a long wait i kinda hope next chapter goes back to whats going on at mahora academy
@ivanov_2020:
Chachamaru doesn’t have two bodies. Akamatsu-sensei already confirmed that the age disguising pill developed by Eva that they’re using right now is ancient powerful stuff that even works on robots.
>>we havent really seen much Fire magic
Why does everyone keep saying that? There are three main characters who specialize in fire – Mei, Anya, and Chao – and at least two minor characters that I recall, not counting Quartum. Spell-wise, so far we’ve seen Ardescat, Sagitta Magica Series Ignis, Calefaciens Exarmatio, Captus Flammeus, Evocatio Salamandriarum, Flagrantia Rubicans, Ουρανια Φλόγωσις (the most powerful fire spell, which apparently calls on the מלאך יהוה that destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, and which Chao used twice), and of course Anya Flame Knuckle and Anya Flame Buster Kick… Did I miss any? Oh yeah, Incendium Gehennae should count too, if 黒龍雷迎 counts as lightning…
Neither Negi nor Eva specializes in fire, so it’s not surprising that wind, lightning, and ice are the most common. But fire isn’t exactly rare… I’d say water is significantly rarer…
As far as Chachamaru’s L.O.L.I. module is concerned, I believe Akamatsu has stated that she didn’t bring it along – she’s been using the pills, which apparently work fine on her despite the fact that she didn’t exist six years ago and has never looked that age…
@Ivanov
Her small form is just the result of the age changing pill. She only has one body with her.
And then next issue we get trolled by cutting over to Mahora or Mana and Setsuna.
Though, really, I wouldn’t mind that so much since that I’m starting to get a bit concerned about the latter two, especially considering that they’ve been in their respective battles for about three hours with barely any mention.
I wouldn’t be too surprised if they have to pull a mass retreat and play keep-away with Asuna for a while, seeing how hopeless everything’s getting. Then maybe take the final final battle to Mahora, or even Istanbul? Maybe…but that’d probably frustrate the fans even more. 😛
@Ultimaniac:
it is… i think i missed that part… is it on the manga or on an interviews?
all this time i was under the impression that her small body that she keep using on this arc is exactly the one on chapter 175.
cuz from that chapter i assume she got three type of bodies. the medium compact, the one she use at that time (since her main body went an overhaul). the loli 10 year old body (the one that satomi shown at that time). and of course the main mature body.
i just assume that she bought them all with her trough magic compartment somehow…
ah well..
@ 93143
Yes we have seen Fire magic, but its we have not seen many spells in it the one Chao casted at the final fight between her and Negi was the equivalent to A Tempest Spell all we really have seen is BASIC fire magic we havent seen really any advance fire magic at all
Worth noting, during Sextum’s quick salutation, while the kanji used is for water the furigana states she’s the Averruncus of Ice.
And now, the torturous three-week wait for the next chapter.
50-50 chance demon Negi wakes up and forces a Pactio on Sextum. T24
Tn the translated part of the authours note of Volume 28 Akamatsu Sensei said that the Majical World part is an Arc so that means Negima will continue after the Majical world my guess would be the Demon plane and an overseas trip to Turkey where class rep said nagi had dissapeared, also that chibi hodded mage I don’t think is Nagi’s master cause it wasnt really clear but I think he chose to destroy himself whe the majical world was collapsing.
Thanks for all the comments. ^_^
I’m amused at the notion that Negi may pactio with Sextum or that this female Fate may join Negi. *lol* I don’t see that happening. ^_^;
Regarding the elemental magical aspect of the series, next time I reread Negima!, I’m going to have to pay attention to that.
Negi obviously specializes in air elemental magic, but thanks to his training with Eva, also has some water abilities too (that spell blade they both use for which I’m too tired to look up). Eva is clearly a water master, though considering her age, she really should be a master of all elemental spells unless Akamatsu-sensei has some sort of restriction against it.
The part about Chachamaru’s body was a question asked Akamatsu-sensei, which he published in one of the volumes around the time of the group going to the Magic World (it was included in the Del Rey release). In many of the volumes, he answered a single question. Starting with volume 28, Akamatsu-sensei began answering lots of questions. I’m hoping one of mine makes it into volume 32/33. ^_^
This time of year is always toughest for Negima! fans with all of these breaks in the month of December through the first of January.
Looking back at volume 25, there was a part where Ku Fei says something along the lines of, “It would be bad if there were four or five of him(Fate).” after they found out his name, Tertium. I guess Akamatsu’s been planning this for a long time.
@ ivanov_2020:
It’s in the cover notes in the back of volume 21.
Quote:
“Q: How did Chachamaru become younger?
A: The Age-Changing spell is an ancient mysterious spell that even works on robots. Toss a pill in your mouth, and poof! It’s taken effect. She did not carry a spare robot body around with her for this purpose, -okay!?” Lol Akamatsu.
>>Yes we have seen Fire magic, but its we have not seen many spells in it
What, you aren’t impressed at the length of my list? We’ve seen almost as many fire spells as we have lightning or ice spells. The only missing stock spells are the Jaculatio and the Tempestas…
>>the one Chao casted at the final fight between her and Negi was the equivalent to A Tempest Spell all we really have seen is BASIC fire magic we havent seen really any advance fire magic at all
Wrong. The one Chao used (actually she used several fire-type spells during that battle, but we both know which one we’re talking about now) was the top-level fire spell, the High Ancient one that starts with “τό συμβόλαιον διακονητω μοί”. There are only two other known spells that start that way and have similarly-structured incantations – Κιλιπλ Άστραπή (also known as Thousand Thunderbolts, used by Negi and his father) and Κοσμικη Καταστροφή (also known as End Of The World, used by Evangeline).
So why was Negi able to pierce it the second time using JTF? A few reasons: First, the incantation for Jovis Tempestas Fulguriens is shorter, so Chao had to rush and didn’t manage to focus the full power of the spell in time (Chamo specifically noted that Negi’s spell was weaker but faster). Second, Negi is a more experienced combat mage than Chao, so his focus and power delivery were better. She probably couldn’t bring out the full potential of the spell at her level. And speaking of focus, doesn’t it strike you that a beamlike attack like Jovis Tempestas Fulguriens might have a tactical advantage in that situation against a semi-directional area attack like Ουρανια Φλόγωσις?
Furthermore, I don’t see how you can dismiss the entirety of my list as “basic”. Just because a spell isn’t the absolute most powerful in its class, or a brand-new invention that makes military tacticians go weak at the knees, doesn’t mean it’s “basic”. (And as I’ve pointed out above, the absolute most powerful fire spell was in the list…)
I finally get why he called himself Tertium (neuter) instead of Tertius (masculine) – the same reason Sextum calls herself Sextum instead of Sexta (feminine). They’re saying that they’re not people, they’re things.
It’s not a completely accurate way to convey it, since most things get a gender in Latin anyway. But it gets the idea across.
…I should note that the Lexicon for Volume 17 states that Ουρανια Φλόγωσις is the same class of spell as Evangeline’s Κοσμικη Κρυσταλλοπηγία – which as we all know is simply a version of Κοσμικη Καταστροφή in which the caster chooses not to shatter the target. Vetus’ entry on High Ancient magic concurs, stating explicitly that Ουρανια Φλόγωσις and Κοσμικη Καταστροφή are fire and ice variants of one another. Ουρανια Φλόγωσις is slightly easier to cast because it doesn’t require the agency of Maxwell’s Demon (ha ha, little joke there)…
i sure hope Akamatsu doesnt have Mana and Setsuna show up for the rescue without showing us their fights with poyo and tsukoyomi. That would really give them(and us)the short end of the stick.
